Why pet odour is so stubborn

Pet odour isn't one smell — it's a mix of skin oils, dander, saliva, litter smells and the occasional accident, all of which soak into porous materials: carpet, rugs, couches, curtains, pet bedding and even paint. That's why opening a window or spraying air freshener never fixes it. The odour source is embedded in your furnishings, and it keeps releasing smell into the air day after day. Step 1: Clean the sources

  • Wash everything washable — pet bedding, blankets, throw rugs and removable couch covers, on the warmest cycle the fabric allows.
  • Vacuum thoroughly — carpets, rugs, under furniture and the furniture itself. Hair and dander are odour carriers.
